Management of aphakia without capsular support : From intracapsular cataract extraction to prosthetic capsular reconstruction

Abstract : Restoration of pseudophakia in the absence of capsular support remains one of the most challenging situations in anterior segment surgery. The history of its management mirrors the broader evolution of cataract surgery. Following the era of intracapsular cataract extraction, which left patients aphakic and dependent on external optical correction, anterior chamber intraocular lenses represented the first practical intraocular solution.
